Skill Level: Intermediate.
Knowledge of split rings is necessary.
Remember, if you have any questions about my pattern, I am just an Have fun!!

Here is a visual pattern, created by Betsy Evans, for those who prefer it:

Wind two shuttles with white thread (continuous thread method).

Beginning with center (white) row on bottom half of the heart (total of 6 white rings).
R: 5ds – 5ds - 5ds - 5ds (Close ring).

* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds –5ds/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds – 5ds (close)
Repeat from * above 3 more times.

Last white ring (middle row):
#1 Shuttle: 20ds (close; cut and tie; hide ends on back of heart or thread in).

Wind two shuttles with red thread (continuous thread method).
Begin with first red row to the right of center white row. Total of 5 red rings.

R: 5ds + (join to side picot on white center ring) 5ds - 5ds - 5ds (Close ring).
* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds – 5ds/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds + 5ds (join to next picot on white center ring) Close ring.
Repeat from *2 more times.

Last (red) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 15ds + 5ds (join to white next picot on center ring). Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with white thread (continuous thread method).
Begin next row to right. Total of 4 white rings.

R: 5ds + (join to side picot on red center ring) 5ds - 5ds - 5ds (Close ring)

* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds – 5ds/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds + 5ds (join to next picot on red center ring) Close ring.

Repeat from *1 more time.

Last (white) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 15ds + 5ds (join to red p of previous 'white' row). Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with red thread (continuous thread method).
Begin next row to right. Total of 3 red rings.

R: 5ds + (join to side picot on white center ring) 5ds - 5ds - 5ds (Close ring).

#1 Shuttle: 5ds – 5ds/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds + 5ds (join to next picot on white center ring) Close ring.

Last (red) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 15ds + 5ds (join to white p on center ring). Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with white thread (continuous thread method).
This is the last two white end rings on bottom right side of the heart.

#1 Shuttle: 15ds + (join to next red picot on prev row) 5ds close; cut and tie; hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with red thread (continuous thread method).
Begin with first red row to the left of center white row. Total of 5 red split rings

R: 5ds - 5ds - 5ds +(join to side picot on white center ring) 5ds (Close ring).

* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + (join to picot on white center ring) 5ds/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds - 5ds Close ring.

Repeat from *2 more times.

Last (red) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + (join to white picot on center ring) 15ds. Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with white thread (continuous thread method).
Begin next row on left. Total of 4 white split rings.

R: 5ds - 5ds - 5ds + (join to side picot on red center ring) 5ds (Close ring).

* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + 5ds (join to side picot on red center ring)/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds - 5ds Close ring.

Repeat from *1 more time.

Last (white) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + 15ds (join to p on red ring). Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind two shuttles with red thread (continuous thread method).
Begin next row to right. Total of 3 red split rings.

R: 5ds - 5ds - 5ds + (join to side picot on white ring) 5ds (Close ring).

* Split Ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + 5ds (join to p on white row)/
#2 Shuttle: 5ds - 5ds Close ring.

Last (red) bottom ring:
#1 Shuttle: 5ds + 15ds (join to white p on center ring). Close ring; cut and tie, hide ends.

Wind one shuttle with white thread.
These are the last two white end rings on bottom left side of the heart, and they complete the bottom red and white striped section of this pattern.

R: 10ds - 5ds + (join to red picot on previous row) 5ds (Close ring).

R: 5ds + (join to next red picot on prev row) 15ds close; cut and tie; hide ends.

The following instructions are for the top (blue/beaded) portion of this heart.

Wind one shuttle with ball thread attached with blue thread (continuous thread method).
Start from left side of heart* and work to the right, with bottom of the heart upside down. *(This is actually the “right side” of heart if the heart is right side up, but you will be tatting this next section with the heart turned upside down, thus starting with the “left” side).

R: 10ds + (join to picot on top of end white rings) 5ds – 5ds. Close, reverse work (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
R: 5ds + 5ds + 5ds (1st join to prev p on blue ring; 2nd join to p on row below) 5ds – 5ds. Close (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
Repeat from *one more time;

R: 5ds + 5ds + 10ds (1st join to prev p on blue ring; 2nd join to p on red row below) close;
CH: 5ds – 5ds + (join to picot at center of heart/top of white row);
CH: 5ds – 5ds (RW);
R: 10ds + 5 (join p on top of red row) – 5 Close (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
R: 5ds + 5ds + 5ds – 5ds (1st join to prev p on blue ring; 2nd join to p on row below). Close (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds;
Repeat from *one more time;

CH: 3ds --- 3ds;
R: 5ds + (to prev p on blue ring) 5ds + (to p on row below) 10ds. Close ring. Cut and tie, hide ends.

Second blue row on top of heart:
Wind one shuttle with blue thread leaving ball thread attached (continuous thread method). You are still tatting left to right, with the heart upside down (as explained above).
R: 6ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 3ds – 3ds. Close (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
R: 3 + (join to prev p on blue ring) 3ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 3ds – 3ds.
Close. (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
R: 3 + (join to prev p on blue ring) 3ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 6ds.
Close;
CH: 6ds – 6ds and join to the picot on blue chain below and tie off.

Wind one shuttle with blue thread leaving ball thread attached (continuous thread method).
Continue the second blue beaded row on right side of heart. Start by attaching ball and shuttle thread to blue chain picot on right side/below (pull loop of thread through on previous chain and bring the shuttle through):

CH: 6ds – 6ds (RW);
R: 6ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 3ds – 3ds Close (RW);
CH: 3ds --- 3ds (RW);
R: 3ds + (to prev p on blue ring) 3ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain picot below and join) 3ds – 3ds. Close (RW);
CH: 3ds--- 3ds (RW);
R: 3ds + (to prev p on blue ring) 3ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 6ds.
Close. Cut and tie. Hide those ends.

Final top row of heart…you’re almost done!! This is tatted with all chains and makes the top outline of the heart. Be sure to adjust your chain tension when working this final outer chain to the top of the heart. Being consistent will enhance the curve of the top of the heart outline.

Wind one shuttle with blue thread (keeping ball attached). Attach shuttle and ball thread to top of first ring on first blue row (do this the same way you attached the thread to the picot above by pulling a loop of thread through the ring and bringing the shuttle through it).

CH: 20ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain picot of 2nd blue row and join) 5ds PB+ (place bead on next blue chain picot and join) 12ds + (join to p on chain below without bead) 12ds and join to center of heart at top of white rings;
Do not cut and continue working to the right side.

CH: 12ds + (to p on chain below without bead) 12ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain p and join) 5ds PB+ (place bead on blue chain picot and join) 20ds and final join at top of blue ring from first row of blue rings below on far right of heart. Cut and tie, and hide ends.
